This song is everything. It shapes a space of negation through her vulnerable disposition and her words “aint got no [insert slew of nouns here]” but in the span of 4 minutes and 7 seconds, it beautifully morphs into a space of affirmation as she exclaims “I got life!”
I saw this NYT article while scrolling down Twitter and I found it particularly interesting. It is a story of a photo collection found by chance, revealing so much about memory and black history in Brooklyn. Given that I use photos in my thesis to highlight what public commemorative works do not, I was ecstatic.
While at the Schomburg Center in Harlem working on my thesis, a fellow Amherst student, Noah Morton ‘17, accompanied me to sift through a ton of archived material. What we saw was nothing short of amazing and the conversations had about remembering these moments depicted in the photographs helped me inch closer to what I envision my thesis to be.
